On May 31st, we traveled to Binghamton NY to take a guided tour of the McIntosh factory. After the tour we picked up my new MC452 from Audio Classics. Seldom have I had a better day!!!
Here are some pictures of the tour. I am not an electrical engineer, so bear with my less than technical or partially accurate descriptions. Some things that struck me during the tour:
    - McIntosh employees were welcoming and tolerant of us stumbling about their work place
    - Employees take tremendous pride in their products
    - The scope of processes done in house "To assure quality"
    - Multiple, exhaustive testing processes at every step of production
    - Focus on quality
    - A big "thank you" to Audio Classics for setting this tour up for us

I put an album on Flickr to save bandwith

Very cool! Reminds me of my days at Rockford.

Very well done on the photos. Great lighting in almost all of them.

    Thanks for the photos.

    Two things come to mind:
    * About time for some new PCs....haven't spotted a Zip drive in the wild in ages:rflmao:
    * All those dedicated factory workers that cannot afford the products that they work so hard to craft each day.

Great post. There are still many folks who take great pride in what they create, design, build and execute on. I'm glad to see no matter the changes in ownership or in how the world turns that there's still a level of excellence to be found. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks everyone, I am glad that you are enjoying the pictures. I highly recommend taking a tour if at all possible. Yes, quality is an absolute priority!
As far as employees owning their own equipment, our tour guide had a nice 70's era system. I am sure there is a strong employee discount program. I should have asked.

50% of (or off) MSRP with the provision the employee cannot sell it for six months - or so I've been told. (I see Chuck now sporting a beard - he looks like a Keebler elf!) :D

Note the plain 'ol RCA ICs used in final testing...[IMG] I see that hasn't changed.

Thanks for the virtual tour. Visiting the factory is always an enjoyable & memorable event.

Thank you very much for the wonderful pics. :music:

Touring the McIntosh plant is on my bucket list. I believe McIntosh exemplifies the very best in American manufacturing, and many, many manufacturing companies could learn much from them. And I sense from your pics McIntosh employees take great pride in their work. I’m just guessing, but I suspect their employee turnover rate is very low, and I love the fact that Jimmy Mac, a McIntosh employee, occasionally posts here in Audio Karma. I think his posts are great PR for McIntosh and I hope his bosses appreciate and recognize the value his posts add to McIntosh’s image.

I sincerely hope McIntosh continues to be successful and that they will be around for at least another 50 years! There is an expensive watch company (Piaget, I think, but I’m not sure) that runs an ad campaign “That no one ever really owns a Piaget, they are just taking care of it for the next generation.” I thinks this statement does a beautiful job of summing up McIntosh. :trebon:

Sorry we missed you! A gentleman walked away just as we were approaching. It was close to 2pm. I was looking forward to watching your process. It was a great tour nonetheless. Timing is everything! :)
