It's hard to rank some of these considering I've never given any a true AB comparison and some haven't been listened to in awhile. Some also have high aesthetic value. Here's my rough estimation:

Technics SA 1000
Yamaha CR 3020
Hitachi SR 2004
Marantz 2500
Fisher RS 1080
Toshiba SA 7150
Technics SA 5760
Sanyo JCX 2900K
Pioneer SX 1050
Technics SA 800
Kenwood Super 11
Luxman R 1120
Technics SA 700
Tandberg TR 2075
Yamaha CR 1000

I'm hoping to find a big Sansui, Rotel, Onkyo and several others for the right price at some point.

Bumping this thread. Just picked up an SA-800A still in the original box with all paperwork, etc. Wasn't used much at all and has been stored in the original box for some time. I was so impressed with the SA-600 that I got for $50 that I couldn't turn down the SA-800A.

Now to hope that a bit of deoxit fixes the pots and then I can compare with my Marantz 2330B. Both of these receivers are pretty huge. The SA-800A was a lot larger than I thought it would be.

The only one I have that truly fits the criteria is my Luxman R-117. But I have three contenders: Luxman R-115, Marantz 2275, and Mac 4275. All nice. All sound great.

I'm a new member here and have been captivated by vintage monster receivers for the past decade. I've probably owned close to a hundred monsters since I started collecting.

Now, only eight remain:

Technics SA-1000
Pioneer SX-1980
Marantz 2500
Sansui G-22000
Hitachi SR-2004
Concept 16.5
Marantz 2325
Sansui 9090DB

That is a lot of iron.

Ya know, I had a 9090 and a AU9500, I realize it’s not a “receiver”, while they were nice to look at, they are both gone. The lower to mid watt stuff does it for me. The monsters do give you bragging rights, but I prefer sonic goodness to watts. Not saying the big guys don’t sound good, but in my experience the little guys have “it”. JMO.

First, WELCOME TO AUDIOKARMA !!!!! Glad to have you aboard.

Also........holy shit! Rock the heck on!

I'm learning it as well. I have a nondescript 1989 Onkyo, 55 watts a channel, and I keep wondering how in the hell it sounds so amazing.

Old JVC S22 something or other I had, 50 watts, was also very sweet. The sweetest of the lower watters?? Yeah, I've stated this countless times, the Sony STR-7065a that I sold, fully functional, for 100 bucks. Damn, but that was lovely sounding watts.

The low-watters I have left, will stay. To be fair about it though, speakers and room size matter, but for sonic bliss the little guys are sweet, if you don’t want to peel plaster from the walls, but once it gets that loud, it’s really not blissful anymore. It seems once you hit 11 on the dial you want to turn it down to 2 fairly soon as it just seems to becomes “noise”.

Yeah, I've heard some of those monsters and I didn't come away thinking they had something that I was "missing". With most 8 ohm speakers, you don't need 250WPC+ to drive them properly anyway.

The highest I have purchased/own is about the 130WPC mark (my SA-800 and Marantz 2330B). Although I don't think either sounds quite as good as my 2285B. They do make a statement with their size though, and they aren't even the largest by any stretch of the imagination.

A lot of money too if that's what remains on the list!

Yeah, what I did was I bought and I sold. Need to do that so I could afford the bigger ones. I'm from the Philippines, btw. There was a 5-yr stretch where I was probably the biggest vintage audio dealer here.
