My 408 Word Introduction

Strangeband

AK Member and Ale Monger
I first joined AK two years ago today so it’s about time for an introduction. I am a communications specialist (the kind who specializes in words not technology), live and work in the Atlanta area, have been married for 19 plus years, and have two children. I grew up in rural Virginia, where exploring musical genres outside of pure country, easy listening, and top 40 proved a fun challenge.

As I’ve grown older and life has become more complicated, I find that it is essential that I have time set aside for music. So I have a main listening area in my basement (sound familiar?).

My main system consists of the following:
Sansui AU-717
Sansui TU-417
Marantz CC4300 CD changer
Sansui SD-7000
Pioneer CT-W4045
Thorens TD 115 turntable with a Shure V 15 Type III cartridge
Kenwood GE 7030 equalizer

My main speakers are a pair of Polk Monitor 10s and a pair of JBL 120Tis—two quite different sounding speakers. From this main system, I can also listen to a pair of Polk Monitor 7s (which are on either side of the fireplace); a pair of Yamaha NS-A635A bookshelf speakers (which reside in bookshelves); or a pair of Cambridge Soundworks outdoor speakers (in the area under the screen porch, near the grill). A Niles speaker selector makes this changing possible.

The only part of this system I had when I joined AK was the Pioneer cassette deck. My pre-AK system was a Mitsubishi DA-R35 receiver, a pair of Speakerlab S190 speakers, and a Sony CD changer, whose sudden death propelled me into looking to see what was out there. (That receiver now powers my son’s system and the Speakerlabs are paired with a Sansui 771 receiver, a generic DVD/CD player, and my trusty Sony TC-FY600 in an ancillary system.)

Since arriving at AK, my knowledge of music and stereo gear has changed for the better. I’ve received excellent advice from many folks here and listened to a great deal of great music I would otherwise never have experienced. I’ve also had the chance to interact with a bunch of lunatics and have met, both in the forum and in-person, a number of folks whom I count among my friends.

When I was lurking and thinking of an AK name, I picked Strangeband as I had recently listened to a Family song called “Strange Band” and many of my friends often labeled my taste in music as strange.

Nice to know you a little better. If your taste in music is strange, then so is mine :thmbsp:

Hey Strangband,

Nice to know more about you. It's been a pleasure! A little "strange" is good fun!

Cheers,
Carl

Nice story, Strangeband - I think it applies to a lot of us! :music:

Sounds strange to say, after two years, but... Welcome to AK! :D
