It has been a long time since I posted on AK regarding any changes to my system, so here goes:
My 31-year old Onkyo A-8057 is in need of some work, probably some recapping and a good thorough cleaning, and while I have not completely put it out to pasture - I decided it was time to try something new. I have always praised Yamaha amps for their neutral, clean, unpretentious sound, and this A-S501 is certainly no exception. It is a great match for my old Boston Acoustics A-150’s; however my next upgrade will hopefully be a set of Tekton Lores.
The AR-XA continues to be my mainstay for vinyl, although I have since modded mine a little. I replaced the arm tube with one from an old Technics turntable, rewired with Cardas, and put on a standard headshell. It makes cartridge alignment so much easier, and negates the issue of IGD. Add to that a VividLine stylus on the Shure M97XE, and this turntable sounds the best it has in years! I do also enjoy the 2x2 IKEA Expedit units that house all this - they were a steal at a yard sale for $40.00 for the two.
Since my last post, I have moved the electronics downstairs to the basement, which has since been waterproofed and refinished. Because I keep funny hours, it’s nice to be down here late at night listening to music, knowing that it is not keeping my wife awake - thus improving the WAF. I’m grateful that she is as understanding and patient as she is when it comes to my gear.
