Name the 5 most favorite bands (musicians) in your life

Black Sabbath
Sleep
Electric Wizard
Church of Misery
Metallica

I can't remember the last time I actually listened to Metallica, but they get put on the list purely because of their influence on me as a kid. Growing up in a town of 500 people in a time before internet, I listened to what was on the radio. Metallica was as good as it got for me back then. They started my obsession with music. So alas, #5 on the list.

At 14, a friend introduced me to the "Garage Days Re-revisited" Ep.

To this day, I think it is some of the finest work of any heavy band. Classic covers done quickly, with obvious drive, energy, and a healthy dose of fun. This after the tragic loss of Cliff.

I never ever get bored with that EP. Have it on CD, Vinyl, and Cassette.

Only 5?

The Beatles
Fiona Apple --Deserves way more credit than she gets
Michael Jackson
Metronomy
Polica --Newbies but still...sexy R&B bass hooks and grooves...dual drummers...

Had to do 3 lists

Over my lifetime of loving music, these are the ones that stand out the most when I think about who I really developed an appreciation for:

#1 Cowboy Junkies (Either you get it or you don't)
#2 The Who (Best live band I've ever experienced)
#3 Steely Dan (Incredibly well produced albums)
#4 The Beatles (Couldn't possibly leave them out)
#5 Pink Floyd (Ah, the teen years and the occasional psychedelically enhanced party)

Others I can't resist listing:
#1 Bob Dylan (Well, because he's Bob!)
#2 Buddy Guy (Loud electric blues is sometimes exactly what's needed)
#3 Led Zep (Loud Rock and Roll is sometimes exactly what's needed)
#4 Neil Young (Such a wealth of great music)
#5 Grateful Dead (See #5 from previous list)

Others that frequently find their way onto my turntable these days:

#1 Joe Walsh (Pre-Eagles, just good old fashioned R&R guitar)
#2 Townes Van Zandt (IMHO the best country song writer ever)
#3 Mark Knopfler (Solo & Dire Straits, it's all good)
#4 Alejandra Escovedo (Lush yet gritty at the same time)
#5 Chris Isaak (Truly great voice)

I suppose this depends on what type of music one likes. I like a little bit of everything. But the ones I listen to most are:

1. Queen/Freddie Mercury.
2. J.M. Jarre.
3. Yanni.
4. Paul Mauriat and his Orchestra
5. Pink Floyd.

But there are so much more...

-The Kinks/ Ray Davies
-Bruce Cockburn
-Pink Floyd
-The Who
-Steely Dan

does it have to be only 5 ?

That's a tough question to boil down to only five. With those limitations is going to be a rock heavy list for me.

The Beatles
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Frank Zappa
Pink Floyd
The Who

Given that I have about 75,000 songs on my hard drives, narrowing down to five is difficult indeed, but if I am going off the cuff and sticking to some of those core influences on my musical life, I would have to say:

Grateful Dead
Bob Marley (surprised not to see more of him on here...)
Bob Dylan
Pink Floyd
Public Enemy

I really wanted to include Joni Mitchell, Fela Kuti, Bruce Springsteen, Black Uhuru, Black Flag, and Neil Young, but that would be more than five...

Rock:
Alan Parsons Project
Doobie Brothers
The Eagles
Kansas
ELO

Jazz/Jazz Fusion:
Herbie Hancock
Jean Luc Ponty
Al Di Meola
Stanley Clarke
Earl Kugh

Blues:
Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble
Eric Clapton
B.B. King
Buddy Guy
Joe Bonamassa

"Jónsi" Þór Birgisson
Isaac Brock
Benjamin Gibbard
Ronnie James Dio
Ozzy
Eminem

Wow this is tough...but here I go:

Lynyrd Skynyrd (I'm from the south....I cant help it its in my blood)
Led Zeppelin
Iron Maiden
Rush
Van Halen

Then comes:

Sabbath
Priest
AC/DC
Pink Floyd
etc, etc......:D

The Mountain Goats
The Who
James Brown
Eric B and Rakim
The Melvins

Tomorrow it'll be someone else. I could write up one of these each day with different bands and be entirely sincere.

I think it should be in catagories

Ac/Dc

R&B

Supremes
Isley Brothers
Four Topps
Jackson 5
Temptations

Country

Toby Keith

Only 5 impossible ?

There are so many! Well here we go and in no order, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, John McLaughlin and The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. Like I said not enough, I could fill pages, but hey that was fun! BigB.
