Need a stereo power amp. but...

I need a (new or used) stereo power amp. but i have a few requirements:
200Wrms or more
Power level meter LED or needle. I don't like plain black or silver boxes.
A/B speaker selector. I test speakers too often to do without
Input level knobs L/R. Its good to be able to set a limit to volume control.
Do power amps with a headphone jack exist? I never saw one.
As you see everything i ask is common sense, if you know of one let me know ASAP, my speakers are hungry.
I' m partial to pro amps, i prefer home audio units.

Yamaha M-80/M-85/MX-1000, et. al.?

First thing that comes to mind. 250WPC, A B C speaker outputs. Front panel input attenuators. Big ass bar graph LED looking meters

Look to a pre for headphone outputs. Never, ever saw a power amp with them and never would expect to.

Hi,

Actually, the Nikko Alpha 220 power amp has a headphone jack on the front panel. I believe the others in the Alpha series do as well.

Hello bastek,

There have been some great recommendations so far. I happened to be photo archiving some gear today and a either of these DBX models might do the trick.

Wow, the DBX look nice.

Any comments amount about the sound?

Thanks for sharing those pics. I love seeing photos of stuff that I haven't seen before.

How common are those DBX amps those would be great for biamping or an active sub sat system.

Usually headphone connections are made on the preamp, so I wouldn't use that as a criteria for finding a power amp.

Hi Bastek

Keep an eye out for:

Nikko Alpha VI: has a headphone socket, and cooling fan and weighs a ton. (the ultimate amp for you i guess)

Bose 1801:

McIntosh MC-2300

Sansui BA-3000

Proton AA-2120

Pioneer Spec 4

No cheap amps....not all over 200 watt amps...but power enough ....for cheap i would choose a nikko amp or the proton.

This is the best picture I could find. Maybe I'll take a photo of mine...

Hello chasaboo,

No problem as that is what is great about these forums.

I will say that they are exceptional amps and sound great. They have no problem driving most any speaker, and can handle my Martin Logan Clarity low impedance dips with ease. In fact, I have never even come close to pushing either of these amps to the max, as the BX-3MkII has dynamic peaks of 600 Watts at 8 Ω and 900 at 4 Ω. It uses 4 separate power supplies, toroidal power transformer and (16) 150 Watt high-power transistors in a push-pull configuration to deliver a power potential of 2.4kW!

How common are those DBX amps those would be great for biamping or an active sub sat system.

Hello MOPAR3,

Yep, these are great for that type of application, and easily configured with the flick of a switch on the rear panel.

They are somewhat rare to come by, as those of us who have had the pleasure of using them have tended to hold on to them. They do however show up on the common selling venues. Watch for them and you will see them pop up on occasion.

I have a Denon POA 1500- actually had three.

Though rated at 150wpc, Jpdylon claimed a bench test of the POA at 200wpc.

The POA 1500 features meters, A/B switching, soft-start, variable adjustinle output with fixed output option, subsonic feature switch and high pass, and the POA 1500 series II features a headphone jack.

The model came in both 110 and 110/220 switchable models.

The 1500 is a champagne face. The 1500 II is black face- but looks better in person. It also adds that headphone jack.

Like I said, the POA is rated at 150wpc. One of my early models benched at 178/179, but claims at 200wpc have been made for these.

Some very very nice suggestions here, thank you. Any current production models available?

A Kenwood Basic M-2 might do
1 LED Power meaters
2 a/b speaker selector
3 front input level knobs
4 headphone jack
5 220 wpc

Hi Bastek...

Only current production models for homeaudio that come with VU-meters i can think of are some brands from the far east:

Advance Acoustic (for instance this one) MAA-406

16786px.jpg

and an even bigger poweramp:
107sy9g.jpg

or: Jungson JA-88D (guess its an integrated amp)

14cwcar.jpg

And ofcourse the expensive more recent series of McIntosh....

There is an older thread on this subject overhere....

Soundcraftsmen 5002

250 watts per channel @ 8 ohms

375 watts per channel @ 4 ohms

Class H Circuitry (Runs very cool no need for a fan)

A, B Speaker Switches

40 LED Indicators (20 per channel)

Left, Right Gain Controls

Will operate on as little as 10 amps under 120 volts.

I used to own one so, I know it will fit the criteria you are looking for.
