Netflix Streaming Finds

Have you seen my bike?
I thought it would be cool to start thread devoted solely to Netflix streaming titles, as I'm sure there are many Netflix subscribers on AK.

I'll start: Red Hill

Terrific independent drama/thriller set in back country Australia. Beautiful cinematography and an amazing score. Highly recommended!

Started (Series One, Episode One) a new stream @ netflix last night, a Brit programme titled Being Human (catchily rendered in all lower case lettering as "being human"). I enjoyed the S1/E1 episode. Missed the pilot which seems to be lacking @ Netflix (per usual), so I'll have to pull that out of the ether (if it even matters; I got the plot, so to speak). More to follow in Series I, then we'll see about following up with Series 2-4.

Nice idea for a thread.

Music fans may already know of this one but just in case, One For The Road. A low-budget, joyful documentary of a musical road trip by Glenn Tilbrook (from Squeeze). The RV he's driving is nearly a co-star. :)

And as fan of British comedy, I have to recommend Spaced. Oh what fun! Simon Pegg and Nick Frost - need I say more?

Search for 'Classic Albums', whole series based on some of the biggest releases of the past 40 years. Plenty of archival footage and conversations with producers/engineers and the artists. Some noteworthy titles:
Duran Duran's Rio-clearly much more than a pretty boy pop band
Sabbath's-Paranoid
Doors-self-titled

Billy Wilder's "Witness for the Prosecution". Great cast; Charles Laughton, Tyrone Power and Marlene Dietrich to start. And in supporting roles Una O'Connor, Elsa Lanchester, Torin Thatcher, Henry Daniell and John Williams.

Good recommendation. The Classic Albums series has some interesting programs; a little something for many musical tastes. I watched a program about the making of Dark Side of the Moon which was fascinating.

Colleague recommended the 2-part adaptation of "Atlas Shrugged" available at NF. Might give that a try, Part I at least.

An Unlikely Weapon: The Eddie Adams Story
Excellent documentary.

Middle Men

Description from Netflix:
After spotting a big financial opportunity in the future of Internet pornography, straightlaced entrepreneur Jack Harris (Luke Wilson) enlists his pals Buck (Gabriel Macht) and Wayne (Giovanni Ribisi) to help him develop an online billing company specializing in adult entertainment. But as the firm takes off, Jack finds some unexpected kinks in the business of kink -- including mobsters, the FBI, con men and terrorists.

Don't think the 2nd part has been released yet (has it even been filmed?)
1st part isn't bad - but its hugely limited by the budget!

IMO I thought Red Hill blew, poor acting and not enough budget, almost as bad as Apaloosa.

Sorry you didn't like it -- care to share some streaming recommendations? BTW -- Red Hill's RT score is 78%, so clearly not everyone liked it.

Here are some good Documentaries and a couple series that we have enjoyed.

Your Gonna Miss Me ~ Documentary about the 13 Floor Elevators lead man Roky Erickson. Sad but fascinating

No Direction Home ~ Documentary, Bob Dylan. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Lillyhammer ~ Series starring Steven Van Zant (Little Steven) about a mob boss who picked Lillyhammer Norway for his witness protection program relocation home.

Knuckle ~ Documentary about two Irish families who have been feuding for quite some time, "solving" their issues bare knuckle style.

Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him?) ~ Documentary. self explanatory.

The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia ~ Documentary about Jesco White and his family. Oddly entertaining or depressing. I still haven't decided which yet.

I like Killing Flies ~ Documentary about Kenny Shopsin. Greenwich Village restaurant owner and character. Excellent stuff.

Exit Through The Gift Shop ~ Documentary about a eccentric french shop owner and filmmaker turned artist and his pursuit of English graffiti/painter, Banksey. I loved this one.

Doc Martin ~ English Series about a surgeon that develops a phobia about blood and moves to the country to be the town Doc. We are on season 2 now and can't walk away.

+1 on Exit Through the Gift Shop. Great documentary.

Two of the most challenging/gut-wrenching documentaries I've ever watched are:

Dear Zachary: A Letter to a son about his father
Deliver us From Evil

Both are incredibly powerful and incredibly well-done. I challenge anyone to sit through either of those and not choke up.
