New releases, 2015

Just watched a new Diet Coke commercial, recognized the singer instantly. Such a distinctive sound. First that great Apple ad with Stevie Wonder, now Coke, and recognition for her album. She's having quite a year.

Just now heard a 30 second promo for an ABC mini series, Of Kings and Prophets, using Andra's "Rise Up" for the soundtrack. Not to mention her great Grammy performance. You go, girl!

Owl City / Mobile Orchestra / Republic Records

Those that think that Owl City are just a retread of the Postal Service won't find anything here to change that opinion. The main difference from their past albums is that half the tracks have "featuring" vocalists, there's more "big radio-friendly pop" and less of a dream/synthpop sound, and Adam Young continues to write more about his Christian faith with each album. After hearing "You're Not Alone" (featuring Britt Nicole) repetitively on the local Christian Adult Contemporary station my wife leaves on constantly in the car, I finally bought a cheap copy of the CD. A highlight is growing-up-in-the-90s nostalgia song "Unbelievable" which naturally has the band Hanson as the featured artist.

Holly Herndon / Platform / 4AD

Interesting experimental electronic album by Miss Herndon, who happens to be a native of my hometown of Johnson City, TN. She is also currently a doctoral candidate in composition at Stanford. Her main instrument is a laptop computer, and much of her compositions involve coding in Max/MSP.

Other than an creepy oddball whispered track "Lonely at the Top" that is intended to trigger ASMR (not that I dislike creepy and oddball, as I'm a big fan of Coil) that doesn't fit in with the rest of the material, I rather enjoy this album.
