New to this-8080DB Repair

Be very careful when you re-install that driver board. It's all too easy to install it one pin off and you will let the smoke out of the power supply board if you do. Before you turn it on after installing the board, be sure to check the installation by installing the hold down bracket. If the bracket doesn't fit perfectly, the board is in wrong.

Well,
The receiver is toast. Literally. I installed new resistors (SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY) checked everything about a million and one times. Plugged the board in, checked the connections, moment of truth. Turned on the receiver, watched the light flash and suddenly,
YES!! Relay click and green light. Then I looked back at the internals, and smoke was coming out of the power supply. Unplugged, turned off.

Unless a professional can repair it for me I’m sorry to say that it may be one for the scrap heap, or parts.
I’m really upset about it, I was very excited to own and use such an awesome piece. Oh well......

Maybe that’s what I did wrong, becuase the exact same thing you said was what happened, I’m sure I didn’t though, but if I did it was an accident. What can I check if that was the case?

AAARGH!!! DANG IT! If I’d checked the forum in between the resistors arriving I’dve seen the warning. That’s exactly what I did. Crap. Checked the board again and it’s one pin to the left. I assume I have to rebuild the power supply now? What do I have to do to fix this.

Did you did a DBT?
Can you share some pictures?
What parts did you replaced?
Did the unit comes out of protection without the driver board

When you install it a pin off it burns a ground trace on the bottom of the PS board. It's a dramatic failure but doesn't do any real damage. (Don't ask how I know). You can replace the burned trace with wire from point to point. Turn the receiver on it's side, transformer down, and take the bottom cover off. You should be able to see the damaged trace(s) on the bottom of the PS board.

You need to fix this before doing anything else.

Fixed! Opened the bottom cover and soldered on an insulated copper wire to bypass the burnt out trace. Powered on and the relay clicks and light turns green. Now to test with speakers, everything has been put back into place, pins and connections checked, of course. (More carefully this time might I add.

WOOOO! We’re bumpin’ now! With Doby NR off, it works perfectly from both channels! It sounds AWESOME! Used my dad’s klipsch speakers for a test, the bass on this thing is INCREDIBLE!! Only one thing, one of the power meter bulbs need replacing. Don’t know how to do it, but it’s not a huge issue, if It’s labor intensive I won’t do it unless absolutely necessary. OH I can’t wait to get this hooked up to my setup at the cottage! WOOO! Thank so much everyone!!!!!

Welcome to the world of classic Sansui! Glad to hear it's working. The power meter bulbs are difficult to replace. It takes a lot of disassembly and a steady hand with a soldering iron. Best to leave well enough alone for now. Can you post the serial number?

- Pete

AGH. My reply from earlier didn’t post this morning, it’s probably the wonky internet at school. Where can I find the serial number? I’ll take a photo and send it to you as soon as I get the chance.

Thanks, got it. We are trying to track production changes on these models. Can you answer a few questions about your 8080DB? What color is the chassis? Does your driver board have round transistors or black diodes mounted at the top of the heat sink?

Hey, sorry. It’s been a crazy week with school and all, lots of essays. I don’t know how much help I’ll be, but I’ll answer to the best of my ability. Chassis was a yellowish metal (best I can describe it) and the driver board has round transistors on near the top.
