By all accounts he wasn't the easiest guy to get along with and probably burnt a lot of bridges along the way---and in the process lit some long burning fuses too.

True, but he made a lotta people a lotta money. Sometimes, it takes one man's strong "leadership" to realize a vision that greatly impacts others in a grand way.

IOW, he may have been a prick but that didn't stop everyone from getting rich off of his vision and work.
