Okay, how about this CR-1020 problem.

Repaired this CR-1020 and thought all was well. Hooked it up to decent speakers and noticed that the left channel is a bit weaker than the right. Also, found that the tone controls don't work for the left channel.

Ever seen this before?

Any ideas?

Problem is in the preamp. Guess I need to pull it apart.......again. Ugh.

Edit: also just noticed on FM that when in mono the tone controls don't work for either channel.
Loudness does.

Check your solder connections to the 5 small vertically mounted circuit boards.

Hmmm, I have a 1020 with that exact problem, left channel slightly weaker than right...
Not sure about the tone controls, I will have to check that out next time.
If only it is dirty contacts!

Okay, resoldered all 5 vertical boards and while I was doing so I noticed a bad solder joint on the presence control. Went to resolder it and it looked like two of the pins were connected and shouldn't be.
Sucked the solder off and they should not be connected. Resoldered pins.

Powered up and it works perfectly. Not sure if it was that short on the presence control or the connections of the 5 boards.

@avionic, thanks for having me check the vertical boards.
