OK, Walt, get yer crew of brainiacs assembled so y'all can help me figger this pc/hi-fi thing out!
I do have appropriate patchcords to run from the pc to the DPL receiver I have slated for use with the pc.
Last time I tried it, every time I clicked the mouse I got a huge click through the speakers!?
No click through the rather nice pc sound system (a Yamaha three-piece system).
Now, mind, I'm the guy that's had a cd burner for more than 2 years and can't get any thing to go onto a disc! What the ??
The pc knows it is there.
So, y'all know I did finally figger out my scanner to get some pix up on the old AU.
I want to <er, ahem> 'preview' music via downloads

Thanks, allayouseguys,
pete

Ahh, so dare I say it, its Thor, Pete and the damned "sharing" those MP3's?? :D

Are you sure that your patchcord is the right sort?

Needs to be one plug at the pc end splitting into 2 channels at the receiver end. The tip of the plug carries the left channel, the ring around the mid-section of the plug carries the right. So all you need is a cable which splits the two into L/R to plug into any L/R aux/tape/video input on your receiver.

Fire up the software your soundcard comes with to configure, and make sure the setting is 2 channel.

Finally, if your soundcard has multiple analogue outs (like my Audigy) make sure your plug is in the correct socket. Don't laugh but mine wasn't for a week and I tried everything, finally thought I had a dud soundcard and was about to RMA it when I got around to checking that it was plugged in correctly! Duh! :D

If all the above is a bit obvious, accept my apologies ... maybe supply me with a bit more info and I'll have another go at it ...

The patch cords you need are a mini-stereo to RCA cord and one of the mini stereo Y adapters.

Plug the Y adapter into the front channel of your soundcard then plug your PC speakers into one of the Y's and the mini stereo to RCA patch cable into the other.

Now plug the RCA ends into the AUX of your reciever, you prolly know this but DON't use PHONO.

Now when you want to play music from your PC thru your stereo first thing you do (before you turn the power on on your reciever) is if you have a 4 channel sound card you want to choose 2 speakers in the setup thingy, with mine its in the surround mixer thingy of the Soundblaster Live setup thingy, for me I find the music sounds better than when I leave it in 4 speaker mode like I do when I am using my comp speakers.

Turn the volume down all the way on your PC speakers and start some music playing on your PC. Now turn the volumes down on your desktop and on the reciever, then turn on your reciever. You should hear music, with the volume real low on your reciever turn up the volume on your comp to about 80% of maximum. Now adjust your reciever volume so that it is moderately loud. Now go back to your comp you can turn it up louder or down lower by just using the volume control on your comp, which if you are using MP3's you may need to do because some are louder than others and all of the programs I have used to equalize the volume degrades the sound.

WARNING make sure you turn the reciever off before you turn your comp off because if you have the reciever on and have it moderately loud and turn your comp off first you will get a loud *POP* sound that can blow fuses ( I have done it )

Also be sure to equalize the volumes I believe the loud clicks you heard were because you had the volume not equalized and turned wayyyyyy up on your reciever and you have that mouse click sound thingy enabled and it is a really subtle thing at regular volume. But you have to be careful because it is easy to forget and turn one thing up too much and blast it too loud.

pc to receiver

Yes, I'm pretty sure the patchcord is correct. It jacks into the headphone plug, then runs over to the receiver.
Soundcard is whatever is onboard, I don't remember what make/model, but does have .wav.
I have an ATX mid-size with K2-6 @ 500 MHz, 128 MB RAM, Win98se.
Lotsa room for expansion!
Dunno why I would want to listen to the pc, but hey, the pieces are here, just need to get it together.

pete, mebbe I should look in one of the books I have ... but even the dummies & idiots books look like greek to me (or would that be geek to me?)
