Optical audio output on Apple TV question

I have an Apple TV and on it's optical output set up there's a choice between 16 bit and auto. So which gives the better sound?

If Auto works, that is where it should be left (24 bit). 16 bit is only used when outputting to a device that is incompatible with 24 bit.
