packing studio monitor speakers?

i'm traveling to Europe from the US. i have 2 mackie hr824 professional studio monitor speakers. and i want to take them with me. i will have to check them in on the plane.

i read a couple of threads about packing speakers for shipping on this forum. they've been very helpful. these speakers are small and heavy. they are active = have a built in amp hanging out of their back.

whats the best way to pack them for a plane flight?

they are about 33 lbs (15kg) each. i want to put the 2 speakers in one box, so i dont have to pay (over like $100) for checking in an extra baggage. the max weight they allow is 32kg / bag, but they usually dont care if its 1-2 kg more...

some more info on the speakers: http://www.mackie.com/products/hr824/Specifications.html

thanks a lot for the help.

Road case

Mackie probably offers a pro road case for all their gear. did you try them?

Check with a local light/sound company for used road cases. Or build one out of 3/4 inch plywood. I wouldn't trust cardboard.
