Mine was a '69 Opel GT. Can't find any of the pics I once took of it, though.
I did go online, and this was the closest one in overall appearance to mine. Mine had Dan Gurney 8-spoke wheels instead of Minilites (similar, though), mine was white on top and black on the bottom (break-line in the color at the "beltline"- right about at bumper height), and mine had small side-skirts and front spoiler that I made up out of formed sheet metal. Also, my interior was black.
Mine originally was a 1.1 liter, but Dad and I converted it over to a 1.9 liter with a modded 1.5 liter closed-chamber cylinder head and a 3.67:1 Rallye differential. It'd definitely come out of the hole rather rapidly!
I also added a rear sway bar from a Kadett station wagon and lowered it about 3/4"... with the suspension set up that way, there were very few cars of the day that could take me on a multi-lane off ramp around here!
This was one of three GT's I owned... the first one being a total rust-bucket from Florida. I didin't know how rusty it was, until I had an accident and all the body-repair bondo and metal started coming apart right in front of the right rear tire (behind the door)... it was like the frame was actually coming apart!
The second one, was a 1973 that we bought with a blown engine. I was going to fix it up, but somehow got side-tracked with the '69 mentioned above. My dad took over the '73, and installed a 1.9 engine from a '69 station wagon in it (which always seemed to have outrageous power, for a stock engine- that stupid thing would do 132 MPH- I KNOW, because I DID IT once!)... we kept that, supposedly for my sister- but she was always a bit frightened driving a car THAT small, and THAT close to the ground (she couldn't see over the sides of the other cars!)...
My entire summer before junior year in high school was filled with bodywork and installing a good 1.1 liter engine in it (we didn't change it over to 1.9 liter until 3-4 years later). Got it painted late in the summer (by a guy who was later jailed for MURDERING someone, scarily enough!)... it was one sharp-looking thing at that point.
Sold it in 1990, to finance buying a "more practical" car (1984 VW Quantum, which was also a good car!)...
I wouldn't be surprised if someday, I decided to try nabbing another one of these. Would be an interesting thing to stuff a warmed-over Ecotec and 5-speed gearbox into... would actually wind up being LIGHTER WEIGHT than stock...
Regards,
Gordon.
