I have a few cans in the just under $200 range, among them the Sennheiser 598's, the ATH-M50x and the AKG 240 Monitors, AKG K240's. But now I'm a Philips fan. PHILIPS!?? They make light bulbs, TV's and toothbrushes. Z says this much better than I could.

I have both Philips models reviewed and am in total agreement.

Oh no. Not the bash the products themselves but Zeos Pantera's reviews are just so bad. He manages to convey excitement but fails to convey any other useful information. There's also the question of whether or not he's profiting off of affiliate links without properly disclosing them but that's another topic.

I can't take the reviewer but I think the 9500s are a very solid value. I do prefer my Q701s but at all new prices, the current Q702 or Mass Drop equivalent is four times as expensive as the 9500s. The 9500s are easier to drive, too.

Somebody on r/headphones posted an eBay link to $15 SHP9500s. I thought about pulling the trigger but I was leary of it being a scam :/

Agree, Z is hyper! Isn't that what good sound is all about? OTOH his posts are no more or less informative than other's I've read. On a dollar for dollar basis I can't argue with his point re: the Philips SHP9500 and more so the Philips x2 . Whoda thunk Philips would come up with quality headphones at an affordable price?

I thought $50 was a good deal... $15 is insane. That's a Big Lots or a dollar store price!

I collect all Philips things... (well the audio-related things, not coffee makers etc.) My SHP9500 I do like a lot too.

While Philips started out making light bulbs, they have at one time made every single product you can name that used electricity: cine projectors, synthesizer keyboards, personal computers, broadcast transmitters, tubes, transistors, capacitors, etc, and of course zillions of radios, TVs, tape recorders, etc. Now they specialise mainly in medical devices like MRI scanners.

Not many technical companies have been making the same product in three different centuries!

The odd thing to me is not that they can make good headphones cheaply, but that it is now for them such an insignificant market that why would they want to bother?

I have paid $49 for SHP9500S on eBay, but it was from official Newegg store. They sound good to me, as any open back would sound.

PS: Phillips and Sony created together the CD standard and the first audio DACs.

It was a scam. I pulled the trigger and quickly got an email telling me an account had been hacked. Luckily they didn't get my or anyone else's money. I still have my eyes one these Phillips cans. They do get lots of good reviews. $50 won't break my bank. I just might try them out. If I don't like them they can always be returned.

I've heard a lot of open designs that I didn't think sounded as good as the 9500s.

A LOT! :p

Well, granted the 50mm drivers are probably better than average, I have only my Grado 80i to compare with.

The bigger question is why don't Sennheiser Sony, AKG, Grado, etc. just copy Philips in headphones? Profit margins of course. But if Philips can do it the others surely can. As for open backs I prefer the Philips x2 over the Sennheiser 598.

Chances are you will like them for $50.00.
