My friend and I skipped class and sneaked sown to the local record store to see this and went "Wow". Its a pre photoshop/computer collage by Japanese collage artist Tsunehisa Kimura.

This one suits the band too, deceptively simple but effective.

anyone remember an album cover that looked like an illustration of a guy at a gas station at sundown, but he was working on a guitar not a car? thinking Steve somebody but can't find

Don't know about cool, but these five were among my first:

"Go Bo Diddley" - straightforward cover, but Bo was the coolest. And I wanted that jacket.

"The Chirping Crickets" - back when a geeky bunch could be stars.

"Word Jazz" - Ken Nordine. Totally bizarre, but I loved it.

"Taboo" - Arthur Lyman. Exotica at its peak.

"Sketches of Spain" - Miles, who else.

No pix (why eat up bandwidth), if you're interested you can easily look them up.

Cheers,
Larry B.
WOW!! Ken Nordine! Some of his modern writings? Ageing Young Rebel?

Hmmm...
The Yes Album
Moody Blues Greatest Hits
Nilsson Schmilsson
Edgar Winter - They only come out at night

Thelonious Monk, Underground. I wasn't a teenager when this was released, but when my teenaged self saw it at a record store I thought it was the greatest album cover ever (Discogs photo).

Most people are familiar with Roger Dean's famous covers for Yes, but he also did some fantastic stuff for lessermaxresdefault.jpg known bands, like this one for Osibisa (gatefold, naturally):

Cheers,
Larry B.

That is a really tough question because what I thought was cool, it was unlikely that many others did.
The Who "Who's Next" was one most could agree on.
"Frampton Comes Alive" was very hip.
Santana "Abraxas" didn't have many haters.
The first Rush album that had "Working Man" on it was played a lot.
The one that garnered the most attention at the record store but I still have never heard is this one. For obvious reasons

"Disraeli Gears", and "Cheap Thrills" already posted, but I'll add these..

And a repost for "Ahead Rings Out" as it is such a classic, as well as a great LP.
