Flipping into mono just combines the working and non-working channels together and sends the results to both channels of the amplifier.
Losing the right channel just on the FM tuner means that the function select FM switch contacts carrying the right channel audio may need deoxiting.
You could whip up a signal probe cable to check, left tuner audio is AWE-094 tuner board pin 19, while the right audio is pin 21.
Signal probe is an interconnect cable with a capacitor in series with the center lead (probe with the capacitor's other lead) connected to a tape monitor input.
Then you can set the function switch to FM, yet depress the tape monitor switch to send audio from the cap probe to a single channel of the amp to see if there is signal where you are probing. You'd be surprised how many people complain about the silent OTHER channel - silent because there's NO probe connected to the OTHER jack!!
Your protection problem: the protection circuits are split between the power amp boards and the protection board. See if the same problem happens at the same volume level but with the speakers turned off. That determines if it is a voltage or a current issue. See if the balance control can affect the problem, if it happens with both channels or only one.
Look and see if C2 on the protection board has been replaced (100uf 6v).
Look and see if C11 (0.22uf 25v) on each amplifier card (just about in the center of the card) is new, and if Q8 near it is new (what is it's number).
