PM-82 wierdness

timofred

I'm just a garbage man...
Have owned since new, never run the volume past 1 o'clock position, speakers have always been 8 Ohm.

In the last few weeks I have been having issues.
A relay keeps clicking randomly around the area where the inputs are, it hasn't been effecting the volume of the selected input while listening.

Today it got real weird,

tuner volume was about 10% of normal,
CD volume was normal,
BUT,
Aux 1, from computer sound card would come through EVERY input when a signal was fed from computer.
I cycled through all the variable switches,
Class A, rec selector, mono, source direct, tape monitors, processor,
nothing made a difference.
Looked through the top with a torch, and didn't see anything obvious,
Will lift the lid soon,
What should I be looking at,
bulging caps and burnt resistors are a given,
Is anyone familiar with this sort of issue ?

Any advice is appreciated,
Cheers, Timo.

The PM 82 like it's big brother the PM 95 takes a beating on the power supply boards. Look for heat damage on the solder side of the board. Remove any suspected solder joints, clean and re-solder. I just replace all the diodes in that area and any caps. Also replace the BIAS pots for class A and A/B. You may find they have already cracked, The relays in the rear of the unit are for speaker and in the front are the signal/mode switching relays. Be extremely carful reworking the boards they are very fragile.
