Punker X, et al...what can be done with my tuner?

tygr1

Tin-eared wonder.
Tuner doctors...can any mods or repairs be done to my Marantz 120 tuner to make it sound better?

Admittedly, it hasn't been touched by me...no cleaning, etc. The 120 just isn't quite seeming to be up to snuff. Separation is better on my cheap Nikko 700, and the dynamic range is not very impressive either.

I'm just learning about all this stuff; 50 yrs old and loving my Marantz pieces that I couldn't afford back in the day.

Any help, advice, or PMs would be greatly appreciated.

The local vintage tech herre in town says he can help, but I don't know about him doing any mods, so I'm basically shopping.

Thanks a million in advance kids!

An alignment will help, however of all the Marantz scope tuners, the 120 is probably the worse. It has design flaws in the IF section that really can't be worked around. If you were going to spend money on modifications I would suggest spending the money on a 150 or 125. You will get much better end results.
