Purchase Sansui 5000x or cheaper rare Sansui 3500?

Hello, I have the opportunity to purchase either of:
- Sansui 5000x for $170 USD
- Sansui 3500 stereo receiver for $60 USD

Sansui 5000x has wooden cabinet, supposedly plays fine but lights of front panel (tuner, tuning meter and selector) are too dim or they have gone out:

Sansui 3500 Stereo receiver does not have wooden cabinet, supposedly plays fine, but has a broken antena and is missing the balance knob:

So here are my intentions and thoughts... I plan to use either of these stereo receivers with my SL1200 MK2, also quite often play CDs and sometimes use the AUX to play out of my Mac. The main music I will listen is Jazz (from swing, bebop, and contemporary), World Music, and RnB, ... although I still plan to listen now and then some Funk, Classical, Rock, Pop and Progressive Metal (tool, opeth, etc.).

I would want to have a rich and warm tube like sound. After a lot...and I mean a lot of reading in every single forum, I chose Sansui receivers from early 70s above other options. I am excited about having to purchase something that might require some basic degree of restoration. I figured this would be the best way to learn and understand how a proper receiver / amplifier works. Now, I do not have good knowledge of electronics or soldering. I have repaired a very basic (and crappy) Crosley turntable by changing capacitors and its DC barrel power jack. Not more. I expect either of these purchase to requiere some degree of repair, but having to do a full recap might be too advanced for me now.

I think the 5000x might be better sounding and warmer. I love the wooden cabinet, but it looks sad with its dim light. The 3500 is super rare... I have looked for it in diferent forums in diferent languages (english, french, spanish) and there are only 3 threats connecting to each other with not much info. The only conclusion is that its inside is identical to a Sansui 4000 but with silver top front instead of the typical black. Having a rare item is kind of exciting too. However it has a broken antena and missing knob.

So my question is: Which receiver would you recomend me to purchase? Is fixing the 5000x lights easy? should I chage them to leds? Is the broken antena for the 3500 easy to change for a nicer looking one? are the knobs easy to find? Which would be the best bang for the buck at the long run?

Thanks for your support.

I am not a Sansui guy--I personally don't care for the overly "warm" character of those older units, so I can't recommend one over the other.

As for the lighting issue on the 5000x, that should not be a difficult fix and LED conversion is certainly an option. Just verify that the meters themselves work.

The broken antenna and missing knob on the 3500 also are not major issues--the missing knob is not unique to that model, so other comparable Sansui knobs will work as a replacement--same for the antenna, and I'm sure you can find parts on the net (they may not be cheap, but they are out there).

So either one can be repaired/restored--it is just a matter of which one you prefer. If possible, audition them--preferably in your home with your speakers (if possible). Owning something "rare" or "unique" is always cool, but if the 3500 is not internally identical to the 4000, you may run into parts/schematic issues down the road. Sometimes rare units have parts that are now "unobtanium" and service manuals/schematics are unavailable. Then there is the price differential--that $110 gap in price is significant. That $110 could go a long way toward repairing/refurbing the 3500--but the 5000x has the wood cabinet--and you're the one that has to look at and listen to whichever one you choose.

Good Luck!!!

Plenty of sansui users has good comments on sansui 5000x sound quality. The wood cover is also still in very nice condition.

Hello Ian, and welcome to AudioKarma!

You will probably find much more info on the 5000 and many more threads with members describing their efforts to repair, refurb or upgrade them.

Thank you everybody. Dear Savatage1973, I think you are right! In my extensive search for info of the Sansui 3500 receiver, I never encountered its brochure or service manual. There was a link in one thread, but it is not working anymore. If I cannot even get the schematics, it would be a risk to purchase and try to fix it myself.

Here is the "authoritative encyclopedia" (sarcasm) of everything there is to know about this strange Sansui receiver.

Another important information is that the Sansui 3500 will require me to drive a 60 mile distance (so total 120)... which means expenses in gas and highway toll. The Sansuis 5000x includes free shipping, and the seller agreed to let it go for $140. Nontheless... I would not be able to hear it first (he has sent me some videos, but is not the same).

Should I just take a leap of faith and get the Sansui 5000x?

Another concern is with my current knowledge and skill in soldering electronics, could I change the lights for leds?

Haha MER71. I have thought about it... but I don't feel like sleeping on the couch this week. The wife will not appreciate that juvenile impulse.

Will the wife dislike the cost? The time it takes to go get the 3500? I absolutely love Sansui stuff.

Not the cost. The fact that already having one new toy receiver is fine. But suddenly appearing with two... it maight be trouble...

I don't have 20 hand bags & 20 pairs of shoes.... its gotta work both ways haha.....
Touché!

Anyways, the seller of the Sansui 5000X was way more communicative, sent videos of it working well, switching the knobs and he even gave me several references. He even sent me his legal ID so that gave me much tranquility.

The seller of the Sansui 3500 is a young man which seems he does not know what he has. I already tried to purchase the receiver from him. However he called me once I was already driving to his place (60 miles away from home) to tell me he could not meet. So I guess that makes him less sirious.

All in all I just decided to purchase the 5000X. If I ever decide to sell it in a distant future, it would be easier to sell too. If the Sansui 3500 is still available in 1 year, perhaps I can try to purchase it at even a lower cost... who knows.

Well. I will post pics of the guts of this 5000X to see how good or badly it has been preserved. Cheers!

Hello, sorry for my English. I had at one time several of Sansui equipments, such as 881, 8080db, 9090db, 901, 701 and 9900. I left myself only 3500, now is after fully reccap and plays just great. I have the original scheme, so if you ever need just let me know. I never listened to 5000X...
