Question about Akai GX-650D...

I noticed yesterday that when I am fast forwarding or reverse, it starts out fine....then slows as it gets near to end. I mean almost stops. This is on the ten inch reel. It plays fine but seems to almost "tire" when rewinding the reel. Never done this before..

My question..... is this a maintenance fix or possibly a motor wearing out? Thanks for any reply.

You may need to replace the supply and take up reel motor run capacitors (dual capacitor C1, 4+4 uF, 250V shown in the Mech Block schematic diagram). When these capacitors deteriorate they can cause a reduction in motor torque which could explain your symptoms. The service manual for this unit is available for free download here after registering which is also free:

How old are your tapes ? Ever heard about SSS ?

Good answer but age of Tapes has no bearing depending on Brand. Some newer Tapes have the same problems as older ones.Need to avail yourself with known older Tape brands that are not prone to age related problems like BASF and others:)

Thanks guys for hifiengine link. I went there to download the owners manual. I may have to take it to my tech if I see it is beyond my abilities.
