Question for Tandberg tcd420a and tcd 440 Owners

Besides the 3 heads of the 440a are these the same in recording quality capabilities. Im thinking of buying a 440a or 420a.
 
Well, the separate heads are a key element in the recording quality equation... head gaps are optimized better in a three head deck than one that combines REC/PB and being able to monitor the quality realtime that the 3 head allows is also a useful feature. Not that you can't record well on a 2 head deck, but it'll take you longer (IME) and you have to be better at it to start with (also IME). I went from making pretty good recordings on a 2 head Advent 201A back in the day, which was a very good 2-head machine sonically, to making them on a 3 head Pioneer CT-F900 and later Nakamichi and Tandberg 3-head machines and have not looked back. YMMV.
