Question on jumper on integrated amps

What is the jumper on the Main In and Out jumpered to the PreAmp IN and OUt for. Some amps have them and some don't. ALso can you connect any power amp to the Preamp outs on these integrated amps. I notice that they have power amps like the 140 and then the 170DC version. Just a little confused by this. THanks for helping a Marantz newby out.
