Nice! Can you name a few favorites?

Actually, it would be nice if more people would list their favorites -- or even ones they didn't find so great. Thanks.

Tube Favorites.
For sheer power, the SANSUI 1000A . Even tho the FISHER 800c is similar in the output section, it's more refined, and laid back, where the SANSUI is just in your face. Good one for 50's -60's stuff.

FISHER TA-600. Best sounding of all my FISHER's. Only 7189 based unit in the bunch. Lack of a GOOD WORKING MPX unit keeps me from using it more often, but I'm looking for one.

FISHER 400. The only 7868 based unit I have. Very refined, not as laid back as the 800c. Nothing exceptional, but does everything pretty well.

Solid State Favorites
PIONEER SX-737. No power house by most peoples standards but it does ROCK THE HOUSE with Heresy's or Sansui SP-2500's. Easy to operate (Wife's / Girlfriends like the looks= GOOD WAF!!!!) and has most bang for the buck (utility) of the Solid State units. The SX-939 comes in a close 2nd. SX-626 fights about the 737's class but a lack of protection circuit always has me looking over my shoulder with it.

Sansui's listed. Any of the 2000's. FANTASTIC TUNERS!!!! (I got lucky with all my SANSUI's) Good all around performers and while they have a tendency to a lot of bass it's controllable. Fight above their weight class!

FISHER Solid States. 250-TX 25WPC, Varactor tuning presets, and enough bass on KG-2's to blow the windows out on a YUGO. Great unit for a small bedroom. It's a toss up btwn the 700-T and the 500-TX for sheer power. The 500-TX does have the tune-o-matic (varactor control channel pre-sets) and AM which can be a plus during Baseball season. The 160-T is a mouse that ROARED! Small, compact, minimal controls, varactor tuning (no dial), and fights above it's weight class! Great for computer hook up's or headphones. 550-T and 500-T haven't been overhauled yet.

Allied 395. Well rounded unit, sounds very tube like (laid back and refined). Lack of protection unit again has me looking over shoulder with it. (PIONEER 1000-TD or TW, I can't remember which).

HARMON KARDON TA-360 Festival. In SLOW process of bringing this one back. Somewhat more industrial looking than the FISHER's and my others, but we'll see what cards it's holding.

Thanks! Great descriptions. I agree that the the SX-737 is a special receiver. I had one, sold it, missed it, got another one and had it full restored, largely thanks to your contributions in other threads.

Here's my current list in order of preference:

Pioneer SX-737 -- just a great sounding and looking unit. Some have described it as tube-like; I'm not sure I'd agree, but it is easy on the ears.

upload_2019-2-8_14-19-49.png

Realistic STA-2080 -- a very well-built unit with two phono inputs and lots of flexibility. I prefer its sound to an STA-2000 that I ended up selling.

upload_2019-2-8_14-19-5.png

Realistic STA-85 -- a cool looking receiver, just not quite on par with the performance of the 737 or 2080. The only thing I don't like about it are the plastic volume slider bars.

654BF96E-9999-4739-A4C1-80011BC51DDD.jpeg

Realistic STA-64 -- a low powered cap-coupled gem; not the best receiver, but it sounds great with efficient speakers

sta-65.jpeg

Realistic STA-82 (x2) -- my first real receiver; nice looking and sounding; some have called the sound 'tubby' and I'd have to agree, especially with the loudness engaged.

Nice pieces! But...thats an STA-64 not the "antique-ish" STA-65...looks, and I'll bet sounds, a lot more betterer 70's than the '65 ;) (which I long for none-the-less).

You are correct, sir. Thanks for catching the mistake.

The STA-82 is not showing, did you add an image of that?

...suppose you're gonna kill me and say you have Optimus speakers for all your Realistics, right? o_O

I am on my second STA 85 and I have it driving Marantz Imperial 5 speakers and it sounds pretty sweet. 35 wpc and the easy to drive 5s work great together.

It is a great sounding unit......actually I think most mid line receivers from the period sound great if you pair them with the right speakers.

Sorry, I got busy, but just found an old photo of the STA-82 from another post (updated above). And, yes, I do have one set of Optimus-1Bs and another of Nova-8Bs (with videolady-modded crossovers). I even had a set of Mach Ones that I completely refurbished and upgraded. I regret selling them because they sounded great, but can't keep everything.

LOL! Thanks, yeah, HPM’s have their fans and their detractors on this forum, I like ‘em myself. The HPM900’s are just an excellent rock and roll speaker, they love power and sound great to my old ears!
I’m a fan of HPM’s. They are great rock speakers, and that’s my main genre.

Above is the 'after' picture. Below is the before picture. Just shows you how important correct phasing is. :)
