Recording Static

Replaced a lower-end (Awia) cassette deck from my system with another GX-M50. Never used the Aiwa until today as I'm using that deck exclusively for EVP research.....they work really well for that. I had to replace all the belts and the deck functions/plays well except for one little major area for which deck is dedicated.........I'm recording static along with my regular recording via mics. I cleaned the controls, switches and mic jacks........still a fair amount of static. What did I miss? Many thanks in advance.

Solved the problem......if anyone's interested.

Yesterday I missed cleaning the record switch on the circuit board........gave it a couple good shots this morning, worked the switched and now the recordings are crystal.

I am beginning to think that most 'electronic' problems on (at least cassette and cartridge) tape decks are related to the 'record' switch. Just fixed two 8-track (OK, don't laugh) record/play decks with loud 'motorboat' oscillation on PB by cleaning contacts on the 'record' switches.
