That looks like an extremely rare and nearly impossible to execute method. The Target HVAC example doesn't even apply to this method. Target was a simple internet probe for open ports, and a default password. Nothing like described in this article.
Stuxnet? Also doesn't apply, totally different.

What you're saying sounds correct. However, the title of this thread is a pretty good rule of thumb for putting any data onto a computer whether the user is online or not.
