RS 5001 damping. is this right?

I removed the woofers from a pair of 5001 to do a re-foam on them, and discovered that the box is "critically damped" in other words it is completely stuffed full of damping material all the way to the back of the woofer cone.

Is this correct? if so, i will leave it alone, but the only other speaker I have ever seen packed that full of damping material are my Mcintosh ML2Ms, and that was done by design.

just wondering if this is how these 5001s were designed to be dampened.?

thanks for the input.

My recollection is that is correct.

I also seem to remember that 5001's are well served by adding a fore/aft brace, just above the woofer, to stiffen the front baffle. I added a simple 2x2 cut to exact length to mine while I had them open for refoaming, and my fuzzy memory does recall that the bass sounded a little tighter afterwards. Which of course could also have been the new woofer foams..

MY Infinitesimals and RSM's are like that as well, stuffed pretty darn full with material. It must have been common with several Infinity models.
