I was given one of these amps that lights up but no audio output. Does this unit have a relay? I'm not hearing any click when powered up. Any other ideas?
thanks
Jeff

SA-708 and SA-7800 are very different(Design, Specs.....).The SA-7800 was the "smalest" non-switching amp and the SA-708 the biggest "normal" amp.
(Amps build 1980: SA -9800,8800,7800,708,608,508,408)
But I think they had all relays.

Is it true, that the 708 is the european version and the 7800 th US-version?
I thought both were on the european market, the x800 and then followed by the x08 series.

I was totally unaware of the differences between the 7800 and the 708. Did they have an "american" equivalent of the 708? Are there any differences between the 6800 and the 608?

The SA-608 and SA-6800 share a service manual, so I'm sure they were very similar. The TX-608 & TX-6800 tuners also share a service manual. I own a SA/TX 608 pair. Based on pictures, there are no differences in the front panels of my SA-608 and a SA-6800.

Based on that, in another thread, I had guessed that the SA-708 and SA-7800 were pretty much the same, but it looks like I was wrong -- Foe

PS: Were the SA-x08 series sold in the USA? I think that perhaps only the SA-x800 series were available here, from the SA-5800 through to the SA-9800, with no American equivalent for the SA-708.

One more thing. Before I start, The amp is pretty dirty inside. No, it's VERY dirty inside! cound the relay contacts be dirty and therefore stuck? Does the cover come off the relay so I can check?
thanks
Jeff

SA-6800 and SA608 are the same.
SA-5800 and SA508 are the same.
I think the SA-708 was not offerd in USA.

I had 2 SA-708. But I sold them both. When you have the SA-7800.....& co, you don´t want the "Schwitching-Amps" anymore. The biggest optical difference is the Volumeknob outfit.

This is my SA-608 & TX-608 pair. Both have metal cases and 4-way voltage selection, and I'm gonna get service manuals for both and work on adjusting them myself, as they both have minor issues.

Were there other tuners in the TX-x08 series, and if so, did they all have the black dial (and not the silver dial of the TX-x800 series)? -- Foe

PS: I think the cover comes off the relay, but don't ask me how because I've never done it. My SA-608 has a very loud metallic ping when the relay kicks in, so I'd like to know how to take a look myself.

I have a Pioneer LX-450 which is an European version of the SX-450 !

The face is exactly the same except that i have one extra button (AM MW/LW)

You can see it here, bottom of the page http://users.skynet.be/videos/

The inside is build in a slighty different way, too.

Anyone knows if they made Euro version of bigger receivers? Or were the SX-1080, 1280, 1980 never imported in Europe ?

Interesting. I just made an arse of myself by saying that they were the same. Just goes to show that one hsouldn't trust all that is printed in the Pioneer Bible from Stout Associates!

When Pioneer say non-switching amps I presume that they mean a Pure Class-A amplifier rather than a Class-AB Push-Pull design.

Or am I missing something here?

Trawlerman,

I'm sure the "non-switching" amps are not pure Class-A. The SA-9800 is just too small for 100 watts of Class-A power.

Think it's just some fancy Pioneer circuitry to reduce crossover (switching) distortion.

Then again I could be mistaken.

Hey JsJazz.

Did you ever find a solution to your SA-708 problem?

Picked up one at a yard sale a few weeks ago. Played great for a couple of weeks then exhibited the same symptoms as yours. Lights (mmmmm... bluelites) come on but no relay click and no sound.

Invested in a service manual which is little better than vague. About all it said was if "the relay fails to engage suspect component failure".... Ooooo K...

In reply to a question by mosfet666, there was an North American version. According to the SM they were designated with a S or SG suffix on the rear indent panel. My amp just says SA-708, Hmmm...
