Sampling and Archiving?

Hi Everybody,

I just got my M97xE from Amazon today and just got it mounted so I can't really comment too much on its sound just yet.

I did notice, however, that nowhere on the outside packaging is the word "cartridge" used. This is a bit of a disappointment for someone who has called them this for 45+ years :sigh: At least it is referred to as a cartridge in the instructions :thmbsp:

Instead, underneath where it says "Audiophile", it is thus stated, "Accurate Sound Reproducer for Sampling & Archiving." Gosh, what happened to good old just plain listening? :)

Regards,
Doug

because "records" are antiques and old fashioned. Only good for scratching or some such nonsensicle thing as that. Did you ever think that a $1000 piece of fine quality machinery as a turntable would be denigrated to the rediculous task of mearly dragging the stylus across the surface of an LP just to make a scratchy sound and then have the gall to call it music. God, what have we become?

I guess I'll just stay old-fasioned then because I still find it fascinating and almost unbelievable that those wonderful sounds can come out of those little black grooves on those big black records (OK not ALWAYS black). I even have some late forties 78s that sound amazingly good! Very close to "hi-fi."

By the way, so far I am impressed with the M97. A bit more forward than, say, my 681EEE or my empire 2000E/III but not harsh in any way.

You can thank the damn hip hop rap culture for this kind of abuse on the turntable! It's this kind of pop culture that has denigrated good music. :thumbsdn:

Boy, ain't THAT the truth! Some of the late '80s stuff was OK (like M.C. Hammer's "Can't Touch This) but the current day stuff is just awful. And I can usually find something good in almost any genre of music.

And have you listened to any of the lyrics? Pornography in sound! :thumbsdn:

Oh god, not another innocent thread turned into an anti-hiphop thread! These are becoming as ridiculous as the cable threads!! As for "Pornography in Sound," there are just as many guitar-driven groups that practice that as there are hiphop. Listen to a relatively new band like "The Streets" and you'll hear some of the greatest lyrics ever.

Funny how someone mentioned MC Hammer when he was completely rejected by the hiphop community! As for scratching, that is nearly a lost art...nobody really does it anymore.

Recent cable/interconnect...er...I mean Grumpy Old Men hating hiphop threads:

Umm me too. However, I realize that I got sucked into the anti hip hop thing when I really just wanted to comment on the cartridge thing. Sorry.

Looks like maybe some of that vulgarity is wearing off on you. Hey maybe we can turn your message here into a rap song!

Also don't hear much about that "45 Magnum" either...isn't that the gun that "shoots through schools" in Johnny Dangerously?

Hmmmm M97.... M97..... Where in the hell did the thread go????

How long did it take you to align and set up the cart???

I broke down and ordered one from Amazon also... Will most likely will get it next week....

Well, almost everything I've mounted into a shell lately has taken me longer than it should. It seems that it used to be a snap but now there are always stupid little things that crop up. With this cart, mounting it into a BIC 980 headshell, the bracket with the threaded holes was slightly bowed inward so the holes were less than 1/2" and the screws wouldn't go in straight. Finally got that fixed and then found out that the recess in the top of the cart wouldn't straddle the center raised part of the shell (you would have to have one of these to see what I mean). For now, it is precariously centered so that the edges of the mounting of the cart are on top of the raised part. I am going to make a spacer to completely span the cart so it rests on the shell.

Anyway, after this, it was easy as the BIC shell came with a plastic gauge (similar to the Duals) to locate the stylus tip. Checking with a protractor, it has always been right on. Then balance the arm, set tracking and VTA, all set to go.

So, it probably took the better part of an hour when it should have taken about 15 minutes :sigh:

I think you will be pleased with the M97xE. I got mine from Amazon also and had it within a week of ordering (although their estimated delivery was Sept. 26!).

Cool! I didn't know you could order the M97 through Amazon! Looks like I'll check into that.

You got a gauge with your 980?! Man, I had a 960 back in '77 and got nothing. I had to eyeball the whole deal and pray it was accurate. And just to note, I used a 2000/E-III on it. Sounded awesome. I still miss it.

You didn't get a gauge? Wow! I think I'd take it back if I were you :D

Did you get yours new? It should have come with the gauge, a screwdriver, and mounting hardware in addition to the usual spindles and ICs.

I got mine in March if '76 from Heathkit with, guess what?... a 2000/EIII. You're right, it does sound awesome. I still have the original (stylus replacements along the way, of course) and another one I got from eBaY recently and they both sound great!

I also feel that both of these products get short shrift in audio circles and I have always thought both are excellent. The original BICs (especially the 980 and 960) were well designed and, barring any out of box problems, performed very well also. I've had mine for all these 29 years and have only ever changed the belt (once!), relubed, and replenished the silicone fluid in the cueing piston. Still as quiet as can be.

Eh, I sold it after four years and bought a Dual... which I still own. Nope, no gauge, no hardware, no screwdriver, just the spindles. Kinda late to return it or complain now, I guess:). Mine worked well enough, but I truly hated the platter mat; whenever I played 45's, I was always afraid the stylus would fall off the record and start bouncing off the spokes on the mat and bust off the stylus! :yikes: Happened like three times and I always breathed a sigh of relief when the stylus stayed on:lmao:

BTW, welcome to AK. You're in for quite a ride.

Ya, it seems I remember this happening a couple of times to me with 45s too. I think I was able to grab the lift before the stylus went over more than one spoke :) Of course, if it was in auto mode it would be a bummer not being able to get to it before several spokes passed by :worried: I adjusted mine so the stylus sets down as far in as possible.

Anyway, thanks for the welcome and even though I'm new to this forum, I have been, and still am involved in other forums, newsgroups, Yahoo groups, etc. so I know what can happen (like above hehe).

BTW, I have temporarily taken the M97 out of service until I can get the spacer made to go between it and the headshell. Just didn't like using it in a half a**ed mounting situation.
