Sansui TOTL Speakers SP-5000 and SP-5500 Side By Side?

Softisshh is the right word to describe my 5000s before I had them re-capped...
Now a more silkier sound...smoother...easier...breathes well...the sound is seductively immersive..its like time slowsss down...
Playing Sade now...she is singing in my ear as we dance...
I have two pairs of the 5000's and was wondering what brand of capacitors I should get for them ?

I also have 1 pair of the 5500's..

Willy,

I've used Solen poly caps, non-polarized with good results on multiple Sansui speaker crossovers. You may well get other suggestions here . I like the Solens becuase they are relatively inexpensive (not boutique capacitors with the requisite price tag) and readily available.

Oh, and welcome to the SP-5000/5500 club. More of us here than I expected, given the rarity of both models. I wonder how many more will come out of the woodwork...

Welcome to the SP-5000/5500 Club...
I had my 5000's re-capped by a local technician...I suspect like Sanuiman posted...my tech used Solen poly caps to keep the cost of refurb down...
If your a diy type of guy and do have the time...I'm not...
I would be tempted to do one speaker with stolen's the other with so called 'boutique'...and do a sound comparison...
What I can say is or sing about is...that the sound after re-capping is noticeable...
From memory now clearer/sharper without tending to brightness...a punchy defined bass...smooth and luscious analoguey sound...
Previous to the refurb they sounded like a wall of sound that was soupey...some nice bits but mushy...
Of course my 5000's are driven by various Sansui Amps...with the loudness switch on...the AU-9500 is awesome! So I am biased!
Just a completely different sound to my Wharfedales...I'm pleased to have that choice!

Thank you for the info guys I'll try the solens and see what happens.I've had the 5000's for quite a few years and have always wanted some 5500's and when I saw a pair on Craigslist about 6 or 8 months ago I jumped on them. When I got them home I hooked the 5500's to speaker jacks A and the 5000's to jacks B on my au9500 and then spent the rest of the night moving speakers around to various spots trying to get the best sound and I finally came up with this setup (see pics)I now have them hooked to a g9000 and have them stacked in each corner of my living room about 20ft apart and the sound is awsome. Now i'm getting eager to do the recaps.

My God man, you related to Magnus Ver Magnussen or something? Those 5000's weigh a hair less than the 5500's but I can't imagine lifting them on top of the 5500's. I nearly reopened my surgically corrected hernia just moving my 5500's into place. I did put a set of SP-3200's atop them to get the benefit of the ambient top mounted horns in those, but they only weigh maybe 55 pounds each.

I will say this, 5000's atop 5500's would make Pete Townsend and Roger Daltrey feel right at home. I tend to use Won't Get Fooled Again as a reference piece for listening tests of high power big speaker setups anyway.

I had a friend help me carefully lift them up there and believe me it was well worth the effort. it really brought the sound out pairing the two together like that. It made a difference getting the 5500's off the ground about 18 inches also..

Love the big 70s Japanese speakers
Was chasing a set at one stage

More of a jvc fan
So I picked up the jvc equivalent

With all the amazing equipment you have 427, and yet, you're such a sucker for these interesting Sansuis.

Dear god, I'm the same way. I had a pair of SP2500 Sansuis. Look like they were bought, and never once played or moved. I gave them to my sister, whose son wasn't content to push the dust caps in.....he also ripped out the cones, and knifed the wood. Yeah. They're sitting somewhere now, gathering mold and dust. Ruined.

I am still seething about this, 5 years down the road.

Keep rocking them bad boys! (and I'm still on the hunt for those little Sony's you have praised).

There is a set of these SP 5500, nice cond ( the ones with the big mid horn) available for sale on Vancouver Island in Canada, In case anyone watching or has interest, $450 canadian too!

Read the whole thread. These 5000 & 5500 must not be cursed with the dredded hardened compound on cloth woofer surrounds. My 1200's need to be addressed. Not trying to hijack thread. Have seen threads to treat.

I just got my 5000s earlier tonight, they are awesome sitting on top of the bx1500s, they take practically no power to push and the clarity is insane, to anyone reading this forum no picture does any justice to the size of these monsters I can't wait to do a recap, the only issue is that one of the original woofers was replaced, they did a very good job with their replacement it's not a cheap woofer although not original so it's bugging me, if anyone here on ak has a w 5000 woofer for sale please reply and let me know

Does anyone have a copy of the Sansui SP-5500's owners manual they can scan and email me?
I cannot find it anywhere. Thanks for your help.

What would be a realistic price to pay for a pair of 5500's in good condition today? There are some for sale local to me and they are asking $300 for the pair. Thanks for any help.
