Sanyo....."Architect Series"?

So, my neighbor was just moving out the other day. Knowing that I am an avid audio'fool'....he came out of his garage screaming that the had found the 'mother lode' and that I should come take a look, that I could have what he'd found.

He went on to tell the story of a relative that had purchased this 'system' and had died a short time later (few months or so). It had been pushed around from place to place, that none of the family had ever wanted it. He had ended up with this equipment....at his last house and then to this one where it had been stored for the last 9 years.

I, of course was very excited to see what he had to offer.....turned out to be a Sanyo "Architect Series" rack system.

I got it over to my place.....went ahead and plugged it in. Everything works....like new, it seems. Of course, it was hurting my ears to play it.....these speakers suck royally. I know this because after plugging in the AR 93s....it came to life. It does not sound bad at all to me. Not quite like the Harman Kardon amp I'm used to....but actually very good. It is powerful and clear....punchy in the bass....sparkly even. This was with a Bluetooth receiver hooked up through a video input on the (integrated amp) Sanyo.

Question is....why would they used such crappy speakers? Or, is there an issue with the behemoths that came with it? Or....is it just that hard to make (freshly rebuilt) AR 93s sound bad?

Maybe not the score of the year.....but one thing that I can't help but be impressed with is the outward condition of the components....date codes of 1987....not a single scratch or even scuff on them. Just need a cleaning. Absolutely perfect condition.

Before pictures....

It will be a competent series of perfectly matching components, with the bonus 1987 CD player and a TT with a nice A/T T4P cartridge on it.

Noticed the extra cassette deck at the bottom too.

Great scroe if you ask me. :)

I think orig. owner was into taping and dubbing. Notice you could probably adjust equalization perhaps improve speakers, they might have tired electrolytics.

It is nice they all match. I have found in this hobby that not all "junk" is actually junk - some sounds quite good.

From the story I was told......original owner rocked out with it for a few months and then it was put away not to be plugged in again till two days ago....when I fired it up.....30 years later. I was worried about the dust / moisture inside catching fire or something. But, it was in its cabinet......and covered for many years. My neighbor rolled it out with a blanket taped around it. I cannot see any dust on the inside (from the outside). I did have to help the CD tray open the first couple of times....now its fine. Inside the tape players sparkle like new. Cleaned up like showroom new....I will vacuum it out on the inside soon, I guess. No knobs to deal with....it's all "digital".....

After the cleaning....
