Shure Speakers

picked up a pair of old shure speakers today,have 15 woofer
and big horns,has 1/4 inch jacks.can i hook them to a stereo amp

Yup. Radio Shack for some mono-male-1/4 inch plugs. The big E-V's in my garage use RCA input plugs. Make sure you get two MONO plugs, not two stereo ones. Do all that soldering and then get that wicked 60 cycle hum if you get the stereo ones. I think Parts Express has some on sale right now that have big, fat openings for the speaker cable, which will allow you to use a good 14 gauge cable and maybe even fatter.

The bulbs act like a soft limiter to protect them from to much power.

It's an inexpensive form of speaker protection. Excess power that would otherwise blow the speaker is dissipated as heat and light. UREI monitors were noted for this feature.
