My name is Mike and I have a serious problem.
I can't not buy things like this Sony CDP-50 when I find them in thrift stores.
It's a bit dirty and beat up and needs new belt(s) but it's got potential. I hope.
Weird thing is the transformer is really loud. That seems like it could be a bad omen.
Anyway, I find spending $5-10 on something like this that I can rip apart and see how it works way more rewarding than going to a movie or bowling or something.
If anybody has any info on this guy or the transformer hum, let me know.
    Thanks!

Dropped a new tray belt in and this thing is working fine. Fast track access speed and easily navigated my Ramones Mania go to test CD (30 tracks 70+ min pressed in 1988).
Will not accept burned CDs. Random Sony remote worked fine.
Transformer is buzzing like a mutha. Sounds like a neon sign.
Think I'm gonna tear it down further than anything I've torn before.
    My wife disapproves.

I've found that the ladies are more sensitive to a buzzing transformer that you might think. We had a dvd burner that buzzed, I could hear it but it wasn't a problem, my wife all but yelled at me to turn it off.

I gave it away to our neighbors, neither of them could hear it.

Unfortunately my wife probably wouldn't hear it if she was wearing the CDP as a hat.
I'm guessing the insulation between the plates has broken down. I don't think there is any danger just annoyance.
I've only tried it with the cover off so no idea how loud with it on.
    Looks like this right now.

I just realized you my have misinterpreted the "my wife disapproves" comment.
The buzzing transformer is not the issue.
Me constantly bringing home $7.99 30 year old CD players is what she disapproves of.

Understood. My wife likes Fiestaware, so I make it a point to bring home Cups / Plates / Bowls from that manufacturer ( cost about the same as the 30 year old CD players ) which go a long way to making things much smoother at home.

Vintage sewing machines for my wife. But now I'm hooked on those too!
