I'm wondering if any here have any experience with both of these..long shot maybe but feel free to thoughts on either.
I have to opportunity to pick up the Sony combo, pretty near mint with boxes..etc. Older but still a reference set for redbook I think, with it's dual 1541 S1 chips..not cheap either being pretty rare. investment piece's? I would be trading in my Denon DCD S-1 top loader.

My other option is an Ayon CD5, for less $, I normally like seperates but the Ayon can be used as a DAC and/or a preamp..kind of appeals to me.
I don't think I can go wrong with either SQ wise.. the Ayon is tubed and the DAC does higher res of course..

Any thought or observations welcome.

Hope you don't mind an question - have had a chance to listen to either of them in the context of your own system?

No amount of descriptive prose can substitute for having a listen.

Only point I would make about expensive vintage equipment, will the seller be around when the laser packs up after six months? It might be worth a chance if it sounds great to you though.

Just some thoughts

It's a good question, I have a good relationship with the seller..if I really wanted to I could probably take home for an evening to see how it meshes with my gear. Lot's of options so I'm sure it would mesh with something. I have no doubt it sound's superb.

Really good point on the laser.. not an easy/cheap find, the seller would work with me though I'm sure. One currently on the auction site for a grand..ouch.

I'm going to check out the Ayon player soon, that's where I'm leaning, was hoping someone had one and could relate their experience with it's DAC or preamp capabilities. You are right, I would be best served by listening to it in my system if possible.
I will let the Sony go to someone else, very nice iconic pair but alot of bucks and I think I might have more fun with the Ayon.

Thank you for your thought's

I'm curious how your story ended up -- Did you keep the Denon or make a switch to something different?

I finally picked up a DCD-S1 for my "collection", and it is really an excellent vintage player.
