Sound improvement on a tight budget

1. Ignore the squabbling children.
2. Spread the speakers apart.
3. Get the speakers away from the walls.
4. Get the tweeters up to the level of your ears at your listening spot. You can stack cheap concrete pavers for a stand.
5. find the "first reflection points" and put something soft and breathable there, like pillows or blankets.
 
Hit some thrift stores for used kitchen racks to put the speakers on. I bought mine new because I wanted black but the work great for speaker stands
