Speakers for a huge studio...

One thing that was said was the artist would likely have his back to the speakers. With that in mind - I have to recommend Bose (and I swore I'd never, ever do that). The way they bounce sound off the walls may just create some semblance of a sound stage. I'd recommend wall mount and, as others have said, some acoustic treatment or it will sound like a freakin' echo chamber.

KEF 107's. They can fill a room for sure, with good sound! Not harsh either so long listening periods are no problem.

I forgot to mention, with one set of speakers, all the sound will be at one end of the room and coming at you like a fan. With multiple speakers it will be like swimming in music.

I like the idea of multiple pairs of smaller ones. Heck you could put them along the long walls (like a theater) facing inward, or on the ceiling facing down. Stick a sub or two in the corners.

There are KLH 5s and 6s in Bartertown for $200-$250 doesn't get much cheaper than
that for big sound and they'd get a vintage look.

This also gives them the ability to more evenly distribute the sound at reasonable background levels.

Better yet would be if they were all small powered monitors making them individually adjustable.

I've worked with multiple artists in a common setting, they won't all agree on ANYTHING, of that you can be sure. There will be at least one(the obligatory PITA) in every group for whom it will be too loud once you get it to where the rest of the group can hear it adequately.

There were several pairs of Mcintosh ML-1C also in Barter Town for around $200 and not moving. They should sound and look great!

Electrovoice S1503ER, paint to taste and hang em up outta the way.

Those things do not suck.

Too bad he's not around here- or I could hook him up with a pair of those... I know where they could be gotten, like immediately...

Regards
Gordon.

Pair of Altec A8 compact studio/cinema speakers. I happen to have a pair on casters. Sorry I'm on the West Coast though.

ADS L300C's that you could mount up as satellites:

Yep, some Altec VOTT local in Greenpoint, astounding! On tiny wheels which I would immediately upgrade to 4" polyurethane HD wheels. cover the openings with nice grillecloths and keep that nice industrial look. Then you only need 50W of clean power and a lot of room treatments. only $900 and I'd bet you could talk them down to $800 cash in hand and a moving truck standing by.

JBL L166 speakers, really cool looking with the eggcrate grille, but look to have the wrong JBL 123A woofers (should check this for sure because if they are not even JBL woofers, loses a lot more value for you), you could sell the woofers (used in L100) and get the correct ones from Ebay and still be in good shape:

You could do a lot worse than these ADS L780B's, and price is right:

Just spoke with a friend who picked up a pair of Frazier Dixielanders that would fit the bill. Given they would be used in the city there's a wee bit of irony given they are Dixielanders.

I was at my shop yesterday which is a 24x36 room with mostly sheet metal walls and ceiling and concrete floor. So a terrible environment for audio. I have Infinity Qb mounted on little shelves about 7 ft. off the ground (ceilings are 12 ft). Generally it sounds fairly bad - at least not up to the quality the Qb are capable of. So I was thinking: 1) Make sure the room is not to reflective and full of echoes, and 2) put the speakers on the long wall not the short wall, if you are only using a pair. Normally good advice in any room.
