I have gear in the US 110volt that I want to use in Thailand which is 220. I see on Sears, Ebay and other websites that there are many available.

Is the sound quality the same?

Damage? I read an article warning that you can damage your gear if the transformer is not good, too small, not grounded etc.

Try to get a real transformer, with separate primary and secondary windings, i.e., it's better to avoid self transformers. Regarding the power handling ability, just add up all of RMS power ratings of your gear and multiply this by a factor of two to be on the safe side. Any good quality transformer will do, but some bad quality ones may produce mechanical sounds due to vibration or heat up in excess, etc. Try to put the transformer in a place with open air around so that it may dissipate heat easily. Half of my gear runs on 120 v while my AC mains are 220 v and this has been like this for more than 10 years.
