stripping stain/varnish

I'm refoaming these for a friend and apparently someone has slopped some sort of stain varnish on the cabinets.
any ideas on stripping it off short of sanding?

I've used CritriStrip, with good results. It took old poly off, with no problems. Walmart carries it, so it's easy to find. And if you're into run-of-the-mill strippers, Walmart can help there too!
