Sub Woofer question

I was in need of more bass with a set of M@K S-1B speakers. The funny thing is I had them in a large room and they did produce some bass. I moved them to a small office and the bass was gone. I purchased a sub woofer from a buddy. It is a 250 watt down firing speaker. I hooked it up through my passive pre amp and it did not produce much. I was going from the passive pre to the input on back of woofer. I then hooked it from going pre out to speaker connects on back of the sub and then on to the M@K speakers. It works well now. I was told that this actually sends the signal through the woofer and to the speakers. Is this common with some passives and sub woofers. I was just curious if the passive to woofer is something that does not work for the most part if going from the pre out directly to the woofer.

I would suspect that when hooked to the line level inputs there was a setting that got mishandled. I almost always go with speaker level ins/outs.
