The power switch can be the Achilles heel on those receivers. The ones with the "On" and "Speaker" selections in one switch.
Some repairs are successful others will require a replacement from a donor.
Some will bypass the switch and use a surge protector as you did. Even after replacing the switch, a surge protector is a good idea, saving the switch during the time you are using the receiver.
The switch causing a short is an unsafe condition even if you have it operational, rigged to the power strip. You should decide on a plan of action regardless.
