I purchase these on a hunch:

    https://www.amazon.com/XT-AUTO-50pcs-Number-License/dp/B014V4R6O8

for my SX receivers and TX tuners and they work without modifying the circuit just like the ones offered on ebay but for a lot less. I bought the 50 pack and couldn't be happier. The color is pretty neutral, not yellow and not bluish. I guess I should post a picture of how they look.

I saw those the other day and wondered how they would look.

Here's what they look like. Not bad for 50 cents apiece.

Only problem with them is they will not work on the SX-1980 and SX-1280 receivers due to clearance. They mash up against the wood case and the slightest bump on the wood case will break the tabs that hold the sockets in the diffuser (don't ask me how I know this). I found these quite awhile back and they're great, but you do have to be careful about the clearances. Compared to the lamps that are sold specifically for the SX series receivers and others that use wedge based lamps, they not quite as bright, but the difference is fairly minimal.

I had clearances issues in my SX980 only in the center socket, I use one of these in the center and I can't see any difference. I use these lamps in all my receivers and tuners I like the look and they run cool.

Is it possible to drill a small indentation in the underside of the wooden case to accommodate the slightly taller bulb?

Yes you can I would only go1/4 deep, the top is less than 3/8 thick on the SX-1980 and the SX-1280
