So, in the past few weeks I've managed to get a couple more Akai r2r decks that are in great shape after some clean up. One of those, a GX-265D, is now going to be my user because of the auto reverse. I've got lots of good blank tape that I want to use for big band. So my sole purpose at this time is simply to make decent quality tape from the laptop.

My laptop has an o.k. enough sound card that with headphones, music sounds good although I know it can sound better. A few nights back, I ran the headphone out to the input of the GX-265D and made a tape that has Artie Shaw on one side and Bennie Goodman on the other. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the tape sounded, but, I know it could be a LOT better.

After a crash course in the basics of external DAC's and wanting to experiment a little bit, I found the Syba SD-DAC63094 on Amazon. For 19.99, doesn't seem like a bad deal and has a pretty decent amount of reviews to make the 20 bucks possibly a worthwhile price.

Anyone else using one of these?
