Teac x-1000R. Help please

I know nothing about reel to reels. Had one when I was 18 and just picked my 2nd one up today, 40 years later. It’s a beautiful machine in good cosmetic condition. Came with a dozen or so tapes. Here is the problem. It powers up fine. However, no matter whether I hit play, fw, or rewind, tape will rewind every time. Call me confused. Can anyone help me to figure out what’s causing this? Thanks.

I just finished restoring one of these. Start with this thread for help: http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/general-info-on-teac-x-1000r-rtr.59729/
On mine, the belt had turned to goo and the roller mechanism was frozen from hardened grease. It took a long time to clean and lube everything so that it all moved freely. Then tapes didn't play properly due to issues with tension adjustments and hardened rollers. They are very sensitive machines, demanding of the proper rubber, very clean paths, and properly lubricated joints. You cant just take an old one and power it up. They need servicing immediately (lest you burn out their delicate motors). Follow VintageTx's instructions in that thread and you'll be fine.

Wow, that belt looks like it was made of roof cement.
Ha! That's AFTER I scraped the worst off. You should have seen my workbench, clothes, hands, wiring inside deck, floor, and just about every other place you can think of....and I was being careful! Teac belts age the worst IMHO. Rollers were toast as well (but too hard rather than gooey).

I can attest to that! The belt was busted when I got my first deck, a TEAC a1200u. I spent a good two weeks getting rid of that nasty goo!
