Technics power-on transient

bakes

A bud of mine has a mid 1980s Technics turntable, I do not know the model offhand (he is checking). When he turns on the power, it sends a transient pop through to the speakers. His old amp handled it fine, but it puts his newer amp into protect mode. Now, he can get around it by powering up the turntable with the amp input set to tape and then switching back to turntable, but he would like to figure out what is causing the pop in the first place.

Any ideas? Simple fix or...?

Thanks...

Many turntables have a capacitor in the circuit for the power switch whose purpose is to absorb the power spike that occurs when the power switch closes. When that capacitor fails, the result is an audible pop through the speakers. The fix is to replace the capacitor but the pop doesn't really hurt anything.
