When I was growing up there was a steam engine in the park nearby, It was great to climb on as a kid. Unfortunately they took it away to restore it in the mid 70's and it's still in pieces

    When they brought it in

I am rather partial to this, a steam-powered rail car all homebuilt -

I still have a new Detroit buzz coil for a Fairmont I was given by a railway serviceman in the 1950s.

There are speeder clubs that get together on rail excursions. The concepts intrigued me ever since I stumbled on it.

I almost bought one of the later large Fairmont motors at a get together 20 odd years ago, ended up with an open frame Hercules Economy hit/miss.

Here is an addition that is a few miles from my neck of the woods. This narrow gauge railway was built during the Klondike gold rush at the turn start of the 20th century and runs from Skagway Alaska over the White Pass and into the Yukon Territory It is still in operation today, and while it is now mostly diesel, they still run the steam engines over the pass on a weekly schedule. Here are a few wintertime photos of them clearing the tracks of snow with a 100+ year old rotary snow blower that is most definitely ... Steam powered!
If this sort of stuff is your thing, do check out their web site which is loaded with photos of this amazing railway and lots of history too.

Great thread Chris! I have always been a big steam fan.We have a local railway museum nearby, and they have some really nice rolling stock. Lotta steam too:)
I grew up just down the street from the Montreal Locomotive Works, but it had all gone to diesel by then.

Not specifically steam, but a fun way to watch trains live at various places, and also to check the weather.

Did anyone give or get anything steam engine related for the Holidays?
Me, sort of. A model Sterling cycle caloric engine, with generator.

I would like to plug a DVD I have. Its called "Pillar's of smoke in the Sky". N&W late 1950's action on the Blue ridge. Some of the best film I have ever seen. imagine riding on the pushers and what it was like at the end of steam!
