The Backlight Buzz

I have a JVC LCD TV of a certain age. It seems to have developed a buzz related to the backlight. I say "seems" because I recently got rid of a Dish receiver with a hard drive that made its own noise. It may have masked the TV noise.

I know it's the backlight because JVC's remote has a button for AUDIO which turns off the backlight. Silence! Turn the backlight on again and buzz.

I've seen reports of this sort of misbehavior and suggestions ranging from "live with it" to "get a new backlight panel installed" to "buy a new TV."

I'm tending toward the last item. Is it the case that current TVs with LED rather than CCFL lighting are immune to this sort of thing?

It's likely to be the power supply running the ccfls. They usually have individual low profile transformers for each tube and a complicated SMPS to run them all. Caps galore that go bad. The transformers get noisy when the caps start to fail.

It will be all SMD and no fun to troubleshoot. That said, if you are feeling brave go for it.
