The Shape of Water

Haven't seen it but I find it disheartening to find out my man Guillermo stole the story from Paul Zindel. I love both of their work, dunno why it bothers me.

Couldn't finish it. Couldn't finish Phantom Thread either.

Well, they say that the Arts are supposed to reflect life, and life is found in the Arts.

We have a female human that makes out with an aquatic species in this movie in the running for an Oscar?

The rest I leave with y'all to ponder.

Q

Have not seen it. The captures I've seen point towards some kind of recreation of "Creature form the Black Lagoon", perhaps with some "romance" (in absense of a better word?) added to it?

My impression to a T.

Incredible film! Subverting the usual Hollywood cliches! Beautifully shot and with reverence and love for 50s sci-fi (look at the detail of the faux rust on the faux powder-coated machinery).

And a school friend has been nominated for an Academy Award for costume design.

I couldn't sit through it, turned it off soon as they she was about to break it out.

And this is why you didn't like the movie - you didn't connect. They clearly refer to the creature as a "he" and he is obviously not an "it". He demonstrates intelligence, self-awareness, emotional pain. You didn't get all that? How about the beautiful way the movie was shot? How about the soundtrack? All of this contributed to the whole.

Good question. In regard to awards, I was referencing the soundtrack. An Oscar for the film? No. A Grammy/music award for a well-recorded/sequenced/time-oriented soundtrack? Yes.

Not everyone has to sit through an entire movie to determine they do not like it. It save a lot of wasted time. :D

Nice job cutting out my clear explanation of why I didn't like it. People are allowed to differ in tastes btw.

I agree, your explanation was clear.
I agree, people have differing opinions on things.

I'm not clear on your last comment - are you unhappy with my view of why you didn't like the movie?

I think he's questioning how "you" can offer a view on his thoughts!

Well, now that's a good point. Yup, I certainly did offer my conclusion of why he didn't like (connect was my term) with the movie, and just based on a few words.
Oh well, chalk it up to my habit of posting often and randomly. :):D

I've requested the DVD from the local library only for the director's commentary. (I've already seen the movie.) I thought del Toro's commentary for Pan's Labyrinth was detailed and informative and provided interesting insight into some of the references and symbolism I missed. One of the best commentaries I've ever seen. I'm hoping for the same for The Shape of Water, which I found enjoyable (but not greatly so).

Seems I'm in the minority - can't say it thrilled me. I grew up on scifi films in the '50s, spending many Friday evenings in the theater throwing peanuts at the (obviously fake) creatures on the screen. Oscar worthy? Not in my view. Perhaps younger viewers had a different perspective.

Someone mentioned Arrival. A far better film IMO. This one seemed off balance to me; Michael Shannon, one of my favorite actors, seemed to be playing a caricature of himself. Sally Hawkins was easily the best thing in the film.

Overall, I guess I just didn't get it. Seemed like something from Wes Anderson, not Guillermo del Toro.

Watched it on a plane. I really enjoyed it.

The old scenes they showed, with cars, etc was really well done as well as the story. Unique and cool movie.

My neighbor with whom I watched it with called it "fish porn."

I followed that with the line, "I think they were fishing pretty deep on this one."
