Lets create a list of techs!

Do you consider yourself an experienced and competent to excellent tech that fellow AKer's can confidently send their beloved audio devices to and have them repaired reasonably - cost & time-wise? If you are, please describe yourself, what kind of work you prefer to do, gear you're most familiar with, and anything else you care to share about yourself.

The most frustrating experience I've had in this hobby is the deterioration of my beloved device: a Denon DRA-1025R receiver I purchased new in the late 1980s. It began going into protection mode randomly and got worse until a few years ago when it completely stopped coming out for more than a few seconds. I for one would love to have a list of people I can depend on to send this to.

Not going to happen very well since there are those that advertise with money for the banner ads for services and then those that just work on gear and folks know of them. And why would you need a guy in Tennessee to work on your stuff? You got some good ones in CA.

Surely ppl on here can help you through this... I'd suspect a noisy/leaky transistor in the cascade or drive section, or a dry joint on one...

I myself specialise in Technics new class A amps.... as I'm in Australia I advise over the net... as freight is extortion in costs

Great! Apparently, I have some good ones here but nobody is going to tell me who they are. This would be comical if this piece wasn't so meaningful, but it is. I just screamed into a pillow. Feeling better now.

Well IMHO your soliciting on the open forum for service. I know there are rules that we can't buy and sell on the open forum so in my mined theres no difference here. Not to mention if one recommended someone it's like their involved with the responsibility that everything goes well with both parties. Then we get back to a tech that says, I do those all the time, well they just solicited their service on the open forum. Then the fact the owners of the site get a headache over all of it.

Somebody please just shoot me in the head.

Mellow dramatic much?
Why don't you just start a threads like most people do asking for help to figure out what's wrong with your specific piece of equipment. The right people will show up to help you out.

That'll cost ya extra ... :D

Then there's folk like me, who can solder my own way out of trouble, but would be hard pressed to take responsibility for someone else's gear. Also, being a bit of a pack rat I seldom let one of my baby's go after it's been under the knife here.

PS ... I assUme anyone who takes any advice I give here also has their insurance paid up ... :p

Not only that, being a subscriber gets you Barter Town where you can find all kinds of stuff for sale and sell all kinds of things but anything that will shoot someone in the head is not allowed in BT. Good luck getting that kind of special service.

I agree, start a thread in the correct forum talking about you busted chunk of special and someone will drop in to help you figure it out even if it is a recommendation to send your Leak tube amp to the guy in England who is the best Leak tech on earth. We got no idea of what you are concerned about other than a list which you would have to work on to determine who to consider to trust with your baby. We'll look for your post about the unit.

I thank you both for suggesting starting a thread asking for help. I've done that here a few times with other pieces and with great results, but the two I've already attempted for my DRA-1025R didn't pan out. People did try to help but I believe I'm out of my depth with this piece, plus I don't want to accidentally destroy the unit as it means a lot to me. I currently have a Luxman R-117, Marantz 2330B, Kenwood KR-9600, Sony STR-DA3000ES, and Yamaha C70 preamp with the matching M70 power amp. Who would believe only the Yammies surpass the Denon receiver.

Well I have McIntosh babies, when and if I need service I don't send them off to some yahoo on the internet, I look for a reputable business near by. Your not in the boonies, look around your area for some business with a store front to do the work. That's what I'd do for a sentimental piece otherwise I would just buy something else.

I'm sure you offended at least one someone here with that ...

(Not me ... I know I'm a yahoo on the internet)

Well damn..

I don't care, even with all the friends I have here, I'm not shipping my mac gear somewhere I can't knock on the door and pester them. ;)

I have that Denon receiver and it's great; it even has a very good MC phono stage. I'm not surprised that only quality separates beats it — that was the case in my system too.

It's also nice to see so many member have their rule-books handy — free expression must be controlled by rules on a forum like this.

"The techs of AK", sounds like the ole playboy spreads when I was in college: "The girls of OSU", "The stewardesses of Braniff" (like you all remember what THAT was!)

I for one, do *not* want a pictorial spread of the techs of AK....In fact, I will pay to keep the creation of one from happening...
