Always had a thing for fireworks when we were kids....I would collect deposit bottles, cash them in, and take the subway down to Chinatown, returning with "mats" (80 packs of 20 in each pack, 1 1/2-inchers) of Black Cats and Yankee Boys, rockets of various sizes, and of course, a nice big bag of M-80s (my favorite)….those suckers were powerful, dangerous, and LOUD ! :)

    Let's see ...

-- My mom and dad having a screaming match culminating in her throwing a full wineglass at him (he ducked).

-- My folks going away for the weekend and my teenage sisters throwing a huge party during which I (11 years old) got thoroughly gassed and several hundred dollars' worth of property damage was done.

-- Smoking stolen cigarettes with my JD friends down by the river.

-- Friday night street racing on the highway that led out of town.

-- Painting the fence and getting paint on my new T-shirt, causing the old man to remark, "You don't have the brains to pound sand, do you?"

-- My mother getting buzzed with the neighbor ladies on Valium and Gin & Tonics and collapsing in hysterics as I arrived home from school.

-- My sisters getting caught sneaking out to smoke pot (with boys!) late at night.

-- Guests getting drunk and behaving boorishly at my folks' cocktail parties and my folks refusing to be outdone.

-- Notes sent home from school about me hanging out with "bad influences".

It wasn't all My Three Sons and The Brady Bunch, you know!

When we were kids, the neighborhood parents would sometimes get together for cocktail parties, and once the kids had gone up to bed (or so they thought :) ), the parents would put on "the party records"....very obscene comedy skits by mostly black performers. Moms Mabley, Rudy Ray Moore ("Dolomite"), Red Foxx ("You Gotta Wash Yo` Ass"), Snatch & The Poontangs, and other late-night classics. The sauced-up adults would laugh their asses off, even though they would (mostly) never repeat what was being said on those records.
Of course, us kids would usually hide unseen at the top of the stairs, listening to the shenanigans going on downstairs. Fun times....

The old Linden (NJ) Airport....right across the highway from the big GM plant where thousands of Buicks, Oldsmobiles, and Cadillacs once rolled off the assembly line. Both locations are long gone, replaced by strip malls and big-box stores....

I got to see The African Dip @ Riverside once, very shortly before "the game" was dismantled. I was too young to "participate" in the game, too @ least to have been able to throw the ball w/ sufficient force @ the required distance -- not to mention level of accuracy -- to score a "dunk". A couple of years later I'd have been sufficiently large/tall and strong to give it a shot.

Woolworth&woolco, Sears of course. When the 405 was wide open and when you say it’s an hour drive it really was an hour drive. Drive-in movies in your jammas.

This needs to be "Pinned". I started reading these postings and thought: "Just how old are these old farts?". Then I realized that I remember just about all of those times, too...oops;)
